Glossary
To help with some of the common abbreviations used, here is a quick
reference guide:
- IT stands for Information Technology. This is a term to mean
computers or computing, but is also general enough to include
other sorts of technology, including your network and all devices
attached to it (routers, switches, hubs etc.).
- ICT stands for Information and Communication Technology, which
is basically IT plus telephones. The technology behind telephone
systems and computer systems is converging (i.e. becoming more
similar or the same), so the term ICT has become commonly used
instead of IT.
- SMB or SME means 'Small or Medium sized Business (SMB) or Enterprise
(SME)'. Views vary on exactly how this is defined, but the EU
documents it as 10 - 49 employees and less than £7m turnover
(small) or 50 - 250 employees and turnover below £40m (medium).
The EU also defines micro-enterprises as less than 10 employees.
So, that's most of the Westcountry then...
- Outlook and Exchange are registered trademarks of Microsoft.
Outlook is the organiser program (e-mail, calendar, to-do, contacts
etc.) that comes with Microsoft Office. This runs on the desktop
PC. Exchange is the program that runs on a central server that
turns Outlook from a personal organiser into a 'groupware' product',
providing company wide e-mail and allowing users to share calendars,
share contacts, share tasks etc.
